These students are checking out Valentine Surprise Books—mystery-wrapped reads they’ll unwrap at home. The goal is to read at least the first chapter and see if they’ve found a new favorite book!
Last week, students met our Red, White, and Blue Reading Challenge goal! This week in Media, they’re celebrating with maker activities—buttons, bracelets, bookmarks, and stickers—that let them share what they love about books and reading. This project was funded by a grant from the Brevard Schools Foundation and the Universal Orlando Foundation.
Thank you to everyone who donated books for our K–2 Book Swap! Thanks to your generosity, every K-2nd grader was able to take home a book, even those who didn’t bring one. So many smiles this week as we spread the love of books!
Books are better with a buddy! These friends chose books together during Media and will read the same title over break—a great way to stay connected and have something to talk about in January.
WMSS FIRST LEGO League (FLL) Challenge Update!
This past Saturday, Dec. 13th, our WMSS FIRST LEGO League (FLL) Challenge Robotics Teams, 49997 and 54615, competed in their qualifier event hosted by Rockledge High School.
Each team competed in the robot game and were also judged on their innovation project, robot design, and core values. We are thrilled to announce:
Team 54615 was awarded the Innovation Project Award and has secured a bid to advance to the Central Regional Championship! Their creative thinking and problem-solving skills truly stood out.
Team 49997 represented WMSS with great enthusiasm and commitment. The experience gained, the skills developed, and the teamwork displayed were invaluable, setting a strong foundation for future success!
These 4th graders are showing off their brag tags! They’ve been reading this year’s Sunshine State Young Reader Award nominees and taking quizzes during Media to earn brag tags for each book. Students who earn six or more tags will be invited to the Student Literacy and Media Showcase this spring.

We’re excited to celebrate Literacy Week with a K–2 Book Swap during the last week of January! Our goal is for every K-2 student to take home something new to read!
During Media this week, students got creative after visiting the Holiday Gift Shop! Whether they shopped or just browsed, everyone had a chance to make something special—ornaments, gift bags, and cards.

Thirty 3rd–5th grade students had a great time at today’s SLAM event in the Media Center! We were thrilled to be joined by students from Sunrise Elementary for a day of book-loving fun!
Our amazing Schoolhouse Rock cast, under the direction of Mrs. Gibson, lit up the stage with three sold-out performances this past weekend!
We Hit Our Goal—And Things Got Silly!
Thanks to our amazing students and families, we met our Fun Run fundraising goal! As promised, Mrs. Benson and Mrs. Falcone got silly stringed by every single student—and they took it like champs!

Our 6th grade SLAM team traveled to Southwest Middle School, where they celebrated this year’s Sunshine State Young Readers Award (SSYRA) books! It was a fun, book-filled event full of energy and excitement.
Back at WMSS, the celebration continued—students got to choose their own copies of next year’s SSYRA titles!
Our Book Fair was a great success, and it’s all thanks to YOU—our supportive families, enthusiastic students, and the dedicated parent volunteers who helped make it all happen. Whether your student shopped the fair or you volunteered your time, your support made a big impact!
Even if your student didn’t shop, everyone benefits from the fair. The proceeds will go toward the purchase of next year’s SSYRA books and the renewal of our Bookflix subscription—resources that will be available to ALL students. Thanks for supporting our Media program’s mission to inspire lifelong readers!
